I acquired a Dell T710 server with two Xeon 5650 processors and 96 gigabytes of RAM. Initially, I planned to use it for gaming and streaming with a graphics card upgrade, but that won’t work. The PCIe slot only supports up to 25 watts of power. I’m looking for a board that can accommodate these cores and provide more RAM, preferably one rated for 75 watts. For a GTX 1070, I have an Intel i5 6500 that struggles with both at once. I’m aware the 5650 is often criticized, but I just need guidance. Overclocking these cores to 4 GHz would be ideal if you have dual socket boards that support it. I also have a 750-watt power supply available for reference.

I doubt those xeon's will be any better... Yes they have a lot more "power", but for gaming they will not be great at all. 3 GHz on 1366 socket chips is going to have a drastic performance hit, not to mention suck down LOTS of power. Like, seriously, lots. Another issue, you won't be able to overclock them, and you won't be able to find many motherboard options I wouldn't think. There is a lot of used server gear out there you can try and work with, but its going to be difficult I would think. And even if you do find a board, like I said, its going to be hard to get good gaming performance from those chips. I would possibly think about using one of the server CPU's and a normal consumer 1366 mobo from ebay, and using that as a dedicated stream PC.

Thats an old 1366 platform. Given the low clockrate of the xeons, they will perform very poorly in most games.

I've got this to deal with. Others have tried it too and it performs quite similarly to an I7 8700k.

It doesn’t always mean something is practical. I think it’s worth exploring using it or parts of it for a dedicated streaming PC. Your i5 should handle gaming, while the Xeon takes care of streaming.

Also, to reach those figures they boosted the Xeon to 4.5. I’m not sure what motherboard they’re using or the method behind it. Or how they managed such a high setting... 4.5 is a massive jump from a 1366 chip. My i7 920 performed well at 3.82. Anyway, your previous suggestions remain the best option.

You probably won’t require a capture card or a mixer such as an Astro mix amp.

Yeah, I’m not sure what you’re after, but you’ll definitely need some hardware. It’s better to avoid trying to run games on the Xeon than to risk it. Without an overclock, the Xeon won’t run well. If you decide to overclock, make sure you have a compatible single socket motherboard and a 5650 chipset. Even at 4-4.2 GHz, it won’t be great for gaming, but streaming and gaming together will really hurt its performance.
