I recently purchased a 15-inch MacBook Pro 2015 and I’m really impressed with it. But today it’s been acting up three times—I power it on, it shuts off completely, restarts itself, then turns off again. On the third attempt, I checked the fan control app and saw the temperature jump to over 90°C just from turning it on. It fluctuates wildly between 60-70°C and then drops to -87 to -94°C. I’m wondering if this overheating is causing the shutdowns or if there’s another issue at play. I’m not sure how to figure out the root cause or fix it.
It might be that the ventilation is blocked. Search for a disassembly guide for your model to demonstrate opening it, then give it a light airing. If that fails, at nine years old, the thermal paste could have deteriorated excessively. A video showing the repair should also explain how to reapply the CPU paste.
so in theroy there isnt anything wrong and its probably just a cooling issue ?
Is this your "almost brand new" version you found secondhand? Who can tell what experiences it had before arriving. Look for signs of dust buildup—it might have been lying still on a table with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, never turning on the battery because it stayed plugged in. Cooling wasn’t great on those aluminum Intel Macbooks either; Apple seemed to focus more on quiet operation than performance. The battery itself could be worn out simply due to age, no matter how many times it’s been used.
You were spot on. I ran a lot of tests recently and it only fails under heavy usage after being connected to the charger—then it won’t shut down completely. It took some time digging through logs and trying different fixes, and once it crashed while charging, restarting it brought it back online. The battery is still in poor shape, lasting only a short time before it crashes often.
I contacted him via Facebook about my problem and he mentioned two more units with actual optical drives. I returned the faulty one and he sent me a different model with a 1TB SSD for the same price. He offered to keep the other MacBook and refund $150, but I just needed something that worked perfectly out of the box. So far, the new one has performed well—no shutdowns or overheating issues.
