Hello, I recently upgraded my internet connection. I noticed high ping during games. It turns out my IP address isn’t close to where I am geographically. I’m in Arkansas, but the IP shows up as being in Denver. Since it’s a dynamic IP, it shifts around. Now it says I’m in Illinois, which feels like it should be near servers closer to me. Instead of connecting me to the nearest Arkansas servers, it seems to route through places farther away. I’m not sure what to do—I’m new to this and my internet is otherwise solid, averaging over 860 Mbps. Could you help? This might not have been the best forum for this issue. I just want to improve my ping.

Your IP address details are usually pulled from old records. For instance, an ISP might assign an IP range to a network in Denver months ago, and now another provider has taken over that space or made network adjustments. Online services can't accurately determine your location because they depend on data ISPs provide or other indirect sources, making the info inconsistent. Personally, at work, we received IPs from a business-focused ISP using dedicated fiber lines. They assigned us addresses linked to a city several hundred miles away, and they don’t update these records when mistakes happen. On platforms like Steam, you can select your region for updates or downloads, but the nearest server isn’t always the quickest—it varies based on your ISP and their connections with other providers and data centers.
