I upgraded my PC components last year and now plan to refresh the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. I still have a Windows 8.1 OEM key, but I’m unsure if it works with the new hardware. Should I get a fresh Windows 10 license or just purchase another Windows 8.1 key to keep my system running without losing my files?
You won’t lose any files even if it isn’t reactivated. It’s up to you whether you choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or not. Remember that the Windows 8.1 keys should still function on 10 if you decide to move forward. @GoodBytes might be able to clarify things more clearly than I can.
You can use your existing operating system to install or update the software you need. Check your OS settings for available updates and follow the installation instructions provided.
We can understand what motivates you. It’s wise to back up all your files before moving them, using a secondary drive and performing a clean Windows 10 installation on your SSD after upgrading. Once updated to version 1709, you can restore your files from the backup or copy them over. This approach keeps your system stable. Windows 8.1 and 10 can be transferred by restarting the old setup on the new PC and letting devices register, which avoids having to reinstall everything. A fresh installation is recommended for best results. Also, try activating Windows 10 with your current key on the new motherboard before purchasing a new one. Good luck!
Upgrade the operating system and choose to retain existing files. Transfer the necessary documents to a new directory and remove the outdated windows.old folder. Alternatively, back up your data to another storage device and perform a complete installation.
