Need assistance with Windows activation?
Hey everyone, I recently upgraded my laptop's hard drive to an SSD and cloned everything onto it. After the process, Windows seemed to get damaged, so I had to reinstall it. During my research, I discovered that the Windows activation key is now embedded in the BIOS for Windows 8 and 8.1 laptops. I figured I could take advantage of this and install Windows 8.1 Pro. But it turns out the key doesn’t work for all versions, which is frustrating. Now I’m stuck with an unactivated copy, though it’s not too critical. I’d prefer having an activated version for future upgrades, like Windows 10. Short answer: can I downgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro back to a regular Windows 8 or 8.1? I’m considering reinstalling Windows 8, but I’ve already installed many programs that take a long time to set up. Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Various programs exist to handle this. Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder is one I prefer, though its name is hard to recall. EDIT: It should automatically detect the key as well.
I think the problem might be switching from Windows 8 core to 8.1 Pro.
I originally used standard Windows 8 on my laptop. After cloning it to an SSD, the system became corrupted and stopped functioning properly. I installed Windows 8.1 Pro hoping the built-in key would work across devices, but it didn’t. Now I’m attempting to revert back to the original Windows 8 version. I believe the OEM key embedded in the BIOS should activate it again if I restore to standard Windows 8.
