The technical preview will likely stop in April, and once that happens you won’t be able to download or use it.

The expiration date is often adjusted as required. Microsoft suggested this approach instead of letting everyone adopt the newest version for free. Typically, they release several months after Windows 10 comes out to allow time for purchases before the release ends. Be aware that Microsoft did mention you can upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10 at no cost. The details are unclear, but it might involve entering your Windows key into a website to receive a product key and download link for the official version, or similar steps for upgrading from Windows 8. Similar to Windows 8, you’d need to run a setup that verifies activation, authenticity, and then download the ISO, prepare a USB drive or disk (preferably a disk for backup), and you’re set to begin the upgrade.
