I possess a Windows 10 PC that was initially built for Windows 7. I’m installing a new HDD and only have one drive available. I’m curious whether this will install Windows 7 automatically when I power on the system. My goal is to get Windows 10, but I wasn’t sure if an upgrade would be free. If anyone can assist, I’d really appreciate it.

You're right, the MS site offers support now. It's actually helping out this time.

Great! Your question is clear. The new drive will automatically install Windows 7 when you boot from it.

It seems you're confirming that Windows 7 must be installed and running with a valid product key.

You've likely encountered this on their site before—it's been taken down for about a year. There was a way to get Windows 10 using your existing Windows 7/8.1 key, but it seems that method is no longer available. Online reports suggest the workaround has been discontinued.

Ensure your Win7 key is set to Win10. Use the corresponding key during installation on a new drive. After free upgrading, it supports both versions. If linked to your MS account, simply log in for activation. The free upgrade window is now closed, even for the last exceptions.

You can verify if your code is associated with your account by checking the platform's settings or support section for a link or confirmation process.

You are now signed in to your MS account through the Windows user settings interface, not via a browser. The free upgrade does not include a Windows 10 key. If prompted for a key, you won’t have one available. When reinstalling Windows 10, click to accept the key request if necessary. Once installed, log in with your MS account or follow the activation instructions during setup. The system will activate using a Digital Entitlement License.
