I've been thinking about setting up a VPN for a few reasons and want some guidance. I'm curious whether a paid service or a self-managed setup is more suitable. If it's paid, which providers do you recommend? For a self-managed approach, what steps should I follow? And what are the approximate yearly or monthly costs in the USA? I have some basic knowledge of VPNs but no practical experience using them. I'm planning a new build within the next year and might want a mid-range ITX for this purpose. I also plan to include my entire home network, including my smart TV, in the VPN. I don't have cable internet—I use DSL via CenturyLink, but my router can't support VPN hosting. Thanks for any help you can offer.

It really comes down to what you need. Would you like to configure a VPN for safe access to your home network from the outside, or are you interested in hiding your real IP address and location while using the internet?

Essentially, it's mostly about keeping my network secure from external view. Hiding my internet connection is my top concern due to the nature of my job.
