You can perform the upgrade using a separate installation drive distinct from the one already running Win8.1 on. The support staff mentioned needing to use the Windows icon for the installation process.

When you first set up Windows 10, you must upgrade from your existing Windows 8.1 setup to officially register your key as Windows 10. You also have the choice to go back to your earlier installation whenever you wish, which might explain why you’re considering using a different drive.

Yes, you're considering running both Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 simultaneously.

You're aiming for Windows 10 on an SSD, but your system started as an SSD with a SATA hard drive.

It's currently installed on your SSHD (8GB/1TB) and you're looking to move it to a 128GB SSD. There seems to be no built-in option for transferring between drives, so you'll need to obtain a product key from the manufacturer or retailer. If the key is available, you can install it on your new SSD if it's already connected.

I don’t possess a product key; I received the free upgrade they provided. However, there’s no clean-install option available. I performed a fresh installation on my SSD, but without a key.

Upgrade to Windows 10 on that SSHD. Verify the activation. Finally, perform a clean install of Windows 10 on an SSD.

You can perform a clean install by following the installation steps again or using a fresh installation media. Alternatively, you could copy the SSH key from your SSHD to another device and transfer it, then erase the SSHD on that new machine.
