Need assistance with the internet?
At home I have high-speed fiber and a fast router. Yet when I download data it only reaches around 350Mb/s over Ethernet. I tested my speed on a desktop and got 350Mb/s, then ran the same test on two desktops simultaneously and they both measured about 300Mb/s. When I moved a 20GB video file between computers A and B, it worked perfectly at full gigabit speeds. I’m confused about what’s happening and need some guidance. The router model is ASUS RT-AC68U.
The speeds your ISP claims you receive are usually the maximum possible, but when many users in your area connect simultaneously your connection will decrease. Also, transferring a file between computers inside your home network can take full gigabit performance if all devices support it.
Another chance is the router's hardware lacks the power for Gigabit connectivity. Usually checking this involves connecting your PC straight to the modem and running a speed test. When you achieve maximum performance, the problem lies with the router; if not, the issue probably stems from your ISP.
I tried this and got the same speed. It looks like the ISP might be the problem. However, this is the second ISP we've used for gigabit internet, and we've still faced the same issue with both, so it could be something else.
