I'm working on bringing back some older systems, specifically a Win 98/ME setup. I tried installing the ME ISO but ran into trouble, so I decided to test it first. I followed the Microsoft instructions and completed step 10. Then I received a warning about the HDD—my XP machine passed HDTune without any problems. The only issue is a persistent high-pitched humming noise from an old WD400 drive. Any advice?

The issue appears to lie with the A: drive, not the hard drive itself. Make sure the floppy disk inside has sufficient space and isn’t restricted from writing.

That’s a really strange idea. If the computer is that old, you might want to try a Linux version from Windows 98 instead, since a lot of programs won’t work at all.

Its completely insecure Puppy Linux might actually be the safest choice

The default installation appears in the command prompt. I'm using an ISO file burned to a CD in the D: partition since I don't own a collection of 98 physical discs. I tried using fdisk but it never prompted me to assign a drive letter—it just indicated formatting would happen after restarting, without any reboot options. People assumed it wouldn't matter, but I'm setting up a vintage system for fun. I'm okay with programs not running properly. I also plan to install various Linux distributions on other machines.

Yes, you should choose C: before typing "extract cbd.cab format.com".

Consider returning to step 9, restarting the machine, and choosing "start computer with CD ROM support." This should grant you access to the format utility.

That's my approach. I'll review the entire process once more and capture video or photos. Perhaps I can spot an area where I'm not quite on the right track.

Consider relocating to the D:\ folder and then formatting C:\ You won't be able to do much from the A:\ drive since it doesn't actually exist.

I attempted that just before you saw my response, but it didn’t work. I reworked everything and recorded a video that I’ll upload unlisted to the YousTubes. Maybe I should look in my local library database for resources on Windows 95/98/ME...
