Hi there,
I recently purchased some new RAM for my PC and am considering overclocking it to improve performance when running my music production software. Any advice would be really helpful.
Here are the details:
Motherboard - ASUS M5A78L-M-USB 3.
RAM - Corsair vengeance pro series, 1600MHz, 8GB (x2).
BIOS MODE - Legacy.
Processor - AMD FX ™ 6300 six core, 3500 MHz, 3 cores, 6 logical processes.
Operating System - Microsoft Windows 10 Pro.
I’d love to get the most out of this RAM and would appreciate a simple explanation if possible.
Thanks a lot.
Jake.

Precisely what convinces me is the idea that upgrading RAM could address your concerns. This approach wouldn’t relate to resolving CPU issues, and in fact might worsen stability with your existing setup.

I saw some information suggesting that swapping the RAM might resolve CPU problems in Ableton. I also learned about overclocking these modules for improved speed. Do you believe that's feasible?

In short, running specific VSTs in Ableton causes the CPU to work very hard, which can be tough to manage while using the DAW.

It's unlikely that swapping the RAM would fix CPU problems unless there was an issue with that particular RAM module first. You'd notice this across all applications, not just your music suite. When you encounter these issues, consider what your RAM consumption is. If it's not at full capacity, the problem probably isn't there. Upgrading the processor is more likely the real solution, rather than the RAM.

Your best option seems to be exploring replacement parts or upgrades that could enhance performance and streamline your workflow in the production suite.

It relies on how much the software needs in terms of resources, but your current hardware is quite restrictive. You might consider upgrading to an 8320, though your motherboard isn’t compatible for it and the software likely doesn’t require 8 cores. A better alternative would be a new CPU, a modern motherboard, and more RAM—something contemporary even a basic model could handle well.

It might be worth considering an upgrade, as you suggested. It seems to be the most suitable choice. Thank you for your guidance. You're very welcome.
Take care.
