The software was never yours in the traditional sense. You didn’t own it outright; you only had a temporary license. The idea that you bought software is outdated. This has always been the case. Why do people suddenly believe subscriptions mean you don’t own anything?

The license doesn’t have a set expiration date, and your access remains open after purchasing the software. With this ongoing subscription model, your usage is divided into continuous periods regardless of how long you keep the software. The initial cost with permanent access feels more like true ownership compared to the current subscription approach. While I grasp the business reasoning behind it, as a consumer I still have concerns.

I really appreciate it, and I’m a Creative Cloud subscriber. The reason is clear: instead of spending $3,000 upfront for Creative Suite, I can subscribe for just $10 a month for Photoshop and Lightroom. If I no longer need the software, I simply stop paying, avoiding large upfront costs and saving money. This lowers the financial barrier significantly. Additionally, there are benefits like receiving the latest versions without extra charges. One-time payments also have expiration dates, eventually reaching End of Life. There’s also the risk of technical support ending as the operating system updates, so it’s not a permanent solution.
