You should prepare your USB stick by installing Debian on a suitable partition. Allocate 50 GB from the first drive for storage. The exact partition setup depends on your system's requirements, but you’ll need to decide whether to use a primary or secondary partition.

You can stop the installer, and it should preserve your installation settings.

Would you like the initial drive set as your home drive or just reserve it for additional space? First, boot into Windows and create a 50GB unallocated partition on your Western Digital drive. For extra storage, consider this setup: (In this case, you can simply add files to the 50GB, the system won’t rely on it.) - The new unallocated area formatted as ext4 - The entire USB stick formatted as ext4 and mounted at root (/) If you prefer home mounting, choose this option: - The new unallocated space formatted as ext4 and mounted at /home - The USB stick formatted as ext4 and mounted at root (/) If your system has limited RAM, you might allocate about 4GB for swap on the USB, though that’s up to your choice.

I operate in manual mode and don’t encounter concepts like /root or /home. Debian 8.5 behaves differently from what you might expect.
