I'm just getting started with this setup. Used to live with parents who had fiber, now I have a cable modem from my ISP. I've been thinking about using a Netgear Nighthawk DOCSIS and there are some thoughts on that. It might be worth checking if interference from wood could affect Bluetooth, and the wireless keyboard and Xbox controllers seem to have issues unless they're near the system.
When considering cable modems, start by checking if your provider maintains a list of approved devices they recognize will function properly. Cable modems typically employ channel bonding to achieve higher speeds. For instance, an 8x4 setup means eight downlink and four uplink channels. Increasing the number of channels generally leads to faster performance. Docsis 3.1 models are usually capable of gigabit speeds, so ensure your device matches that requirement. Most cable companies rely on gateways rather than standard modems. Gateways combine a modem with a router in one unit, which can be unreliable—opt for a dedicated modem instead. Bluetooth operates at 2.4 GHz, overlapping with WiFi frequencies, potentially causing interference. Be aware that dense materials might obstruct the signal, and remember Bluetooth shares the same frequency band as Wi-Fi.
Avoid using any modem with the Intel Puma 6 chip. This component is reported to cause problems. It seems this chip was mainly installed in Docsis 3.0 32z8 devices.
