You’re facing a common challenge when upgrading storage. Since the old PC only had one HDD, you can transfer all data from that drive to the new SSD without needing both drives connected simultaneously. Just ensure the SSD is properly seated and powered on. Regarding Windows, if you’ve previously moved it to another PC, you’ll need to reinstall it on your current system to preserve your account and files. Your experience building multiple PCs gives you confidence in handling these steps.

You can transfer all data from the HDD to the SSD, keeping Windows running, though both devices need to be connected together. If you have a SATA DVD drive, you can switch to its cables briefly to link the SSD and HDD simultaneously.

I have backup USB sticks ready. I understand saving files is straightforward on Windows. What method would you use to transfer Windows data from the HDD to the SSD while keeping both devices separate?

Yes there is a SATA DVD drive, I’ll try using those cables.

Create a Windows copy on a network or external drive, exchange the disks, and then restore it. I've tried this several times using a bootable Linux USB and dd tools, but honestly, a fresh installation is better.

I frequently utilize Minitool's Partition wizard to duplicate the OEM HDD onto an SSD smoothly. Typically, I connect both drives using SATA and power cables so they operate together seamlessly.
