I want to refresh our Wi-Fi and regain control. Our previous TP-Link setup was outdated, so we upgraded to an 8GB/8GB plan. The ISP’s equipment doesn’t meet my needs. I’m planning to use an old Ryzen 5 5600G, install it in an mITX socket with 16GB RAM and an Intel X710-T2L NIC, running OpenWRT as the router. My goal is to expand coverage with a mesh Wi-Fi system that can handle over 60 devices. I need three access points: one downstairs connected via wired home unit, and two upstairs on opposite sides of the house. I’ve searched YouTube and online resources all day but haven’t found a solution that avoids digging through crawl spaces or laying Ethernet cables through old coax paths. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't been particularly impressed with the mesh systems I've encountered. A few weeks back I finished installing new cables in my in-laws' attic for their Eero mesh setup. It functioned wirelessly, but they were experiencing significant speed drops between the mesh nodes. The main point is that if you manage to run the cables, it would really help. I previously ran network cabling throughout my home, though I believe the most valuable addition was installing cabling and boxes in the ceiling for access points. This has simplified upgrading and replacing my Wi-Fi setup. Since then, I've changed or upgraded my APs three times, and it's been straightforward—just disconnect the old ones and connect the new ones.
