I haven’t played Mass Effect 1. Should I purchase Mass Effect 2 or 3? Is it essential to go through Mass Effect 1 and 2 before tackling Mass Effect 3?

I’d choose to start with ME1 first.

That game seems quite ancient!

It’s not too outdated, but the game’s age still matters. The visuals aren’t from Minecraft unless you’re suggesting otherwise.

If you're concerned about visuals, skip Mass Effect entirely—they all suffer from poor textures. Even version 3.

You can easily get the entire trilogy at a reasonable price right now, and it's definitely worthwhile. The events and choices in the first game influence the later ones, just like they do between the second and third installments. The series is connected this way. You don’t have to play 1 and 2 in order, but if you want to fully understand the story, I strongly suggest going through all three.

I disliked ME1 (adored 2, liked 3), yet I’d consider playing ME1 at least once if you’re curious about the story and characters. I’d likely hold off until the next Steam discount, since I wouldn’t want to spend $19.99. Edit: I think you should try Mass Effect 2 either way—I might not make many friends for that opinion, but in my view, it’s the best in the series.

I seldom play a game unless I begin at the start, particularly with titles like Mass Effect. To truly enjoy the series, you must initiate from the very first.

Begin from scratch. Every choice you make throughout the games matters, as some key decisions automatically shape the rest if you skip the first two, along with other small adjustments that influence later stages when you play them. A quick tip on ME1: adjust the graphics settings and disable features like motion blur. The blur in the first game is really harsh, and another setting I mentioned adds a grainy look that distracts my eyes.
