A few months back my computer stopped working and all my files disappeared. My friend helped install Windows, but I ended up with Windows 10 Pro. The issue is I can't activate it because I don’t have an organizational account or something similar. Now I’m stuck with an unactivated version. I’ve tried searching online without success, unsure if I’m looking in the right places or using the wrong terms. I’m not sure how to fix this or activate it without paying extra. Do you know any way to downgrade Windows without losing data or pay more? Anyone could help me out!
Ensure you have a valid Windows license. Purchase it from Microsoft.com.
There’s no direct way to remove Windows and reinstall it without affecting other software. You’ll need to back up your data first, then use the recovery options or a clean installation method. If you’re unsure, consider reaching out to a professional to avoid losing anything important.
You have to reformat and reinstall. OR buy a Windows Pro key. This is why I keep my Steam Library and some other stuff on secondary Drive(s). So when I reinstall Windows I loose very little.
You can keep the Pro key as your final choice. Moving everything to another drive and reinstalling should work, though formatting and starting fresh might be necessary. Upgrading from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 is possible, but it’s not a direct conversion—you’ll need to set up the new version properly.
Documents, music and photos can be relocated effortlessly. Software installation is straightforward. While I can't represent every game client, Steam offers a method: A) set up a library on a backup drive and B) transfer games between drives. Regarding the upgrade to Windows 11, I have no opinion. I’m still using Windows 10 and am eager to find out what Windows 12 brings.
It only restores the Windows files, it doesn't let you switch versions. Based on what I've noticed, it only saves your Docs, Music, pictures, etc. There seems to be no pain-free method to move from Pro to Home; you can only go forward, not backward.
