If this applies, expect a 44-pin IDE connector, essentially a 40-pin with four additional pins for power. You should be able to connect both drives using a ribbon cable with two connectors at the same time on the same port. For instance, you can find an example here: http://www.cablesonline.com/102driv44pin.html. I’m fairly confident it will work, provided you configure jumpers so the drive and optical drive switch between master and slave. Windows 2003 should also function well on such an older laptop. You can start the installation process, copy files to disk during the text mode setup, reboot, and then transfer the hard drive to the laptop—everything should work. Windows 2003 behaves similarly to Windows XP 64-bit; just enable the audio service via Services and adjust display settings for hardware acceleration if needed. These settings are usually disabled by default since Windows 2003 is a server OS. If you’re keen to try, I have the ISO files ready and can share them with you if you wish.

I resolved the issue by adapting the connector for the HDD. The laptop is now running smoothly, and I enabled the option to list USB hard drives in Rufus so I could flash the installer to the HDD.
