Backstory: The HDD caddy in my old laptop is faulty. I swapped in an HDD adapter, but now I must install an OS without using a CD. Since booting from USB isn’t possible, I need to flash the XP ISO onto one partition of the HDD while keeping the rest free. I plan to wipe the ISO partition once Windows starts. Rufus can’t identify the drive as a device for this process. Are there other tools that can burn images to disk?

Yes, it can boot from netboot. The BIOS often labels it as PXE boot. If the Caddy module fails, you can simply insert the drive into the original bay, install the OS from a DVD, and then return the drive to the adapter.

It relies on a quirky IDE adapter, but the connector it uses is faulty. I own the adapter, yet it doesn’t function properly because of this proprietary port issue. Unfortunately, I’m considering PXE, though I’m unsure how it would work with an older Windows XP ISO—I might need to test it on another machine since I don’t have Ethernet access.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I don't have the necessary information to help with setting up an XP/7 installer. Could you provide more details or clarify your request?

I didn't know you were attempting to set up Windows XP, but there are many options for Linux and Windows 10 PXE installations. It seems hard to locate recent guides for installing Windows XP without a Windows Server. You might consider transferring the OS from another device and then relocating it to your laptop before applying drivers.

Unfortunately, XP doesn't work that way—each driver needs to match the specific laptop it's designed for. My collection includes many old AMD machines, but this one is one of the few, so its drivers won’t work with other systems I own.

You need certain requirements met, though it isn’t impossible. I don’t recall if Windows XP contains a Setup.exe file.

The ISO seems to work. I'll pause PxE for a moment since using a CD emulator let me load the ISO onto the HDD. It tricks the laptop into thinking it's booting from a CD-ROM port, allowing XP installation. The formatting process might cause issues if the install fails afterward.

Do you have an alternative setup? I’ll handle the initial installation phase where files are transferred from the bootable USB to another device. After that, when the first reboot occurs, the drive is moved to the laptop and should start up properly. I think all system-specific settings are completed at this stage, which likely impacts drivers or performance.

I chose to look into what seemed like the simplest way to install Windows, though Windows XP is no longer supported. It might be possible to get by with Windows 7, but you'd likely need an even older version of WinPE. Proceed with your plan and see if it succeeds.
