Because unbuffered ECC was uncommon and seldom employed in big amounts, only a few processors utilized it. (Examples include Xeon 3400 and E3-1200 v1-v4)

I understand: 1Rx4, 2Rx4, or 4Rx4 where R stands for the module count—meaning how many chips you can send through one bank at once. X4 refers to the total number of chips in that bank. Regarding 2S2Rx4, it seems they're talking about a configuration with two sets of two ranks each.
