Hello, I set up my Apple Airport WiFi router today and am having trouble connecting my Ethernet cable to it. One port is close to my PC, but another port has a separate Ethernet cable leading to the PC, yet the PC isn’t getting internet access. It seems like this setup is more wireless than wired. Could you assist?

You're asking about connecting two routers via Wi-Fi or linking an Apple Router to a modem. Clarify which setup you're working on so I can assist better.

The Ethernet link runs from the router to a device that forwards the connection to another box close to your PC, and then another Ethernet cable connects your PC to that second box. You're wondering about troubleshooting or understanding how this setup works.

Check the links between the two devices. There are many networking items sold in boxed form, but usually a router connects to a modem, which then links to all your computers. Start by confirming the modem-to-router link works—either by plugging something in or testing Wi-Fi. Then identify any problems between the modem and the computer, going backward to ensure each connection is solid.

It seems the modem only has two Ethernet connections available, while the Apple Airport supports four, but both aren’t functioning properly. It looks like the issue might be related to the setup rather than the hardware itself.

What is the model number of the modem? Are you confirming compatibility by connecting the computer directly to the modem? This will help identify the issue.

It resembles this design and is from xfinity. The Apple version would look similar but use Apple AirPort instead.

This setup acts as a gateway rather than a modem. The key distinction is that it combines both modem and router functions in one device. Connecting multiple routers together can lead to complications. Having two layers of NAT and firewalls can cause problems. Check the Apple router for AP mode settings; it should function as a wireless access point instead of a router, which helps avoid issues. I’m new to Xfinity gear since we already own our own modem and router, and haven’t had to pay for a rental one in about five years. Regardless, it should work out-of-the-box. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the gateway into your Apple Router’s stock configuration, it should automatically retrieve a private IP from the Xfinity box and provide internet access. You might need to restart both devices, but generally these systems are designed for plug-and-play operation.

Earlier mentioned that the gateway links to the Apple router, and our primary network is sourced through it. It seems there isn't a direct WiFi connection available from the gateway.
