Hey! Nice to meet you. Just starting here, so let me be clear. My setup is a Lenovo Legion Y720 with an Intel i7-7700HQ and a GTX 1060 6Gb Non-MaxQ that’s cooled with Liquid Metal. I’ve boosted the GPU clocks to 100/500Mhz for both Core and Memory, which improved performance by about 12%. Temperatures stayed under control—peak was around 80°C, average 72°C on both GPU and CPU. That was running on an AC Odyssey with a high preset, which isn’t great for optimization.

Now I’m thinking about pushing it further. The issue is that even if I set the core clocks to 200Mhz, tools like RivaTune won’t go beyond 1900Mhz, which is already the top of my current 100Mhz overclock. I’m wondering if my GPU is throttling power and what I can do to let it run hotter.

I was considering upgrading to a better power supply—something like a Y920 with 20V 230W—and disconnecting the battery from the laptop to avoid any damage. That should help, but I’m not sure if that’s the right fix. Any advice? Thanks!

I used tools like MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z for monitoring and overclocking the GPU.

I watched the temperatures and clocks live using MSI Afterburner. Also checked HWInfo64 after quitting the games. The only thing causing the most heat was AC Odyssey, which hit 80°C max. Other games stayed under 75°C.

Navigate to the settings menu and turn on voltage monitoring. As you increase overclocking, you should notice a drop in operating voltage. Ensure the driver is current.

It's helpful to hear others considered the concept, even if it doesn't match expectations in practice.
