Starting the recording now. Addressing the HDD issues I’m facing—this Seagate model lacks a return ramp, and the head positioning is right next to the spindle (as shown in the video). I suspect the heads might be damaged and need replacement. Since I haven’t repaired an HDD before and no online guides mention this problem, I’m reaching out for advice. The drive contains sensitive data, so I don’t want it sent to a recovery service. Do you think there’s something wrong or is there another way to figure it out? 20240104_171145.mp4

Always handle drives with sensitive data carefully, ideally in a controlled environment. Any particles can worsen damage and complicate recovery. This drive appears to be a Barracuda 7200.12 with 1TB storage, and it requires proper pressure on the head stack to operate correctly—without it, even a healthy drive may produce a loud noise when the cover is taken off. Considering this, what issues were present before you opened it?

This refers to CSS (contact start stop). Seagate remains the sole provider using this, and the final drive model still in use is the st1000dm010, I think.

You can also spot which units have head ramps by checking the position of the internal air filter and how it’s designed on the top cover. Units with head ramps place them on the bottom left, while those without have them on the bottom right. Additionally, models without head ramps should display "Reg model: str009" on the top cover.
