You’ve got a new SSD this Christmas and are looking to set up your operating system. Since cloning didn’t work, you’re starting fresh with a clean installation. Follow the steps for a standard Linux or Windows setup depending on your goal.

Skip the in-OS installer. Download the USB utility from Microsoft’s site. Start the installation via the USB drive and disconnect all other storage devices to ensure the MBR is written to the SSD as well. After the fall upgrade, you may use the 8.1 license key during the clean 10 setup (remember to get the tool from a trusted source).

Windows always resets the partitions it installs on. This ensures a clean setup each time.

You simply connect it to your USB and power it on through the BIOS.

You connect your SSD, insert the USB drive, enter BIOS settings, boot from USB, choose SSD as the installation target, and complete the process.
