Hey there, I'm just starting out with networking. I don't have much experience, but I'll try to explain my issue clearly. I live in a bigger house with four people. Upstairs is the modem/router combo. The signal doesn't reach my room, so I set up a router as a repeater connected directly to the Ethernet port in my room. Our whole house is wired. When I run speed tests, my connection speeds vary from 50 Mbps to under 1 Mbps. Last night I was getting just 0.59 Mbps, which made it impossible to play Apex Legends. We're paying for 300 Mbps internet. What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

Have you explored a mesh network setup? I also live in a big house and experienced similar speeds to being close to the router, though it can be costly. Still, it might be worth considering if you haven’t tried it yet.

I've checked some options. Your worry about ping increasing if you're far from the main router is valid. For a budget of around $250, consider affordable mesh systems like Zigbee or basic Wi-Fi mesh networks. They balance cost and performance well.

If the house is wired is there also a patch panel somewhere in the house?

Do you think it’s okay to run cables through hallways? It works well when you can mount them on walls to keep things tidy.

Consider checking hidden areas like closets, attics, or utility rooms where equipment might be placed. These spots are often overlooked but could hold the necessary connections.

Check what’s already there. It may only require shifting the modem to a spot that connects straight into the panel, after which it’ll be directed to rooms with jacks.
