I just got Pop OS! It’s running smoothly now, most programs are installed easily, only a few remain tricky. 1. Installing .tar.gz files isn’t clear to me. 2. Audacium was added because Audacity now tracks usage; I found ways to add the GitHub repo and install via command line. The interface is small, making it hard to view. 3. Will updating Wine break anything? I’m trying Pop OS 21.04 with Cosmic desktop. Do updates risk breaking things? 4. Anyone have experience with getting Microsoft Office in Wine? LibreOffice works well except for PowerPoint—still need Powerpoint 2019, which isn’t functioning yet.

These tar.gz files are compressed archives using GZip, meaning they often lack a standalone installer. You can usually right-click the file and select "unzip" to place it in the folder you extracted it from.

Installation is flexible—any desktop manager works, letting you pick your preferred one at login. On my work computer, I have around eight installed programs and found it convenient to remove unused ones.

You're looking for information on which version of Audacity you should install, possibly using a tarball. The added features in Audacity are mainly bug reports and IP tracking. Everything tends to collect data, but it's not a major concern. I suggest sticking with the regular Audacity rather than the fork. If you prefer Audacium, please share screenshots of your issue to help identify whether it's related to Pop or Audacium behavior. It's still a stable release, so updates shouldn't break your system unless it's not LTS.

I have several programs on a list to install, so I'm uncertain if there are others that come as tar.gz files. The one I was aiming for was audacium, though I did discover instructions for installing from the command line. If you think I should install the standard version of audacity instead, I wasn't sure because someone on YouTube, known as "Mental Outlaw," made a video titled something like "Audacity gets spooky" claiming it was acquired by a questionable company. Thanks for clarifying the WINE issue.
