Need assistance setting up a laptop with two monitors?
Hi
My wife has an HP Elite Book 830 G8 laptop and wants to use it at home occasionally. She currently uses two monitors at work to spread the workload across a single desktop. What would be a good option that fits her needs?
I own two Illiayam ProLite E240 7HDS-B1 monitors with HDMI and DVI-24 pin, D-Sub mini connections. The laptop manual mentions HDMI 2.0 as the connection type. It’s not very demanding on graphics, so the monitors should work fine. We’ve tried a budget USB-C dock that claimed to connect two monitors, but it didn’t work. She already uses her Windows setup for extending her desktop at work.
I think USB-C could be a good choice since it supports multiple displays. I imagine she could use two HDMI cables from the hub to each monitor. Do you know if there’s a simple, affordable solution that works this way?
Thanks a lot
Phil
It will not work. For USB-C output to handle video, it needs HDMI alt mode or DP alt mode support. Check your laptop's specifications; if these modes aren't listed, they aren't supported. Your laptop's specs don't indicate any alt mode compatibility. You can connect one monitor using an HDMI cable. For another monitor, you might need a USB to HDMI adapter.

When you employ this dock, you might wonder why it wasn't done earlier. The issue shouldn't depend on how the screens are linked to the laptop; they should function consistently. It's worth mentioning that a suitable docking station at work can affect performance compared to simply connecting screens directly. The laptop supports TB4.
