I need some advice, I just got a new GPU and it’s functioning properly. I discovered I can turn on AMD SAM because I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a non-XT Radeon 6700. My ASUS B450M HDV R4.0 didn’t support it with the current BIOS. I updated the BIOS to a version that supports it, and everything worked fine. However, my RAM is running at 2666MHz while it’s rated for 3200MHz. After flashing the BIOS, I restarted the PC, went into BIOS, and saw the RAM set to auto at 2666MHz. I changed it back to 3200MHz, saved, and it started working. But when I turned it off, the CPU fan didn’t spin, so I powered it down, cleared the CMOS, and it worked again—though still at 2666MHz. Anyone knows what’s going on? Should I enable XMP profile? How can I get my RAM to run at 3200MHz with SAM enabled for help? UPDATE: Enabled XMP and it’s stable now.

The standard limit is 2666. Extra capacity needs an XMP profile, which would have required a fix. It’s likely the profile didn’t work and you might have had to manually increase the memory speed. The benefit could be pushing past 3200, though. My understanding is this configuration can support up to 3677 before hitting the infinity fabric limit.

Unless you’re using an H series or A series motherboard, the chances are high. XMP offers a solid overclocking solution year-round. There’s no fixed range here. Thus, manual tuning might actually reduce performance. Boosting memory is the most tedious and repetitive task, often leading people to settle for lower speeds or upgrade to better RAM. A 3200 MHz clock speed without XMP isn’t guaranteed on 12th and 13th generation Intel chips, though it’s achievable in some cases. I installed 3200 MHz RAM on a B650 running 12th gen but had to enable XMP to reach that speed. It seems the memory chips might be of such low quality that even with manual tuning, you may never hit 3200. One issue is that not all memory modules are created equal—cas numbers vary widely in performance. The fastest 3200 MHz CAS16 on PCPartPicker ranges from 16-16-16-35 to 16-22-22-42, showing huge differences in actual speed. Edited February 8, 2023 by Bombastinator

Tnx man, XMP is now active and everything runs smoothly, no issues. No more unexpected reboots—previously it caused problems after the BIOS update. It seems to work fine at 3200MHz now.

They can't enable it automatically due to legal concerns. I'm using a budget memory tier 3200. When it gets serious, I'll upgrade to something better. Might need to act soon. Ddr5 is now worth more than ddr4. They're likely to discontinue ddr4 soon.
