My computer required an update for Avast antivirus, I installed it and was prompted to restart. After doing that, I still can't fix the issue and can't boot Windows properly. Even Windows tools aren't helping except resetting the PC, which I don’t want to do since I have important photos stored there. I’m using Windows 10 preview edition.

You can connect your hard drive to a different computer, retrieve and back up your photos, and then perform a fresh installation.

Could the hard disk drive be the source of the problem?

Then that's an even better excuse to get your important data off the disk ASAP.

It seems like the issue persists even after saving files and restarting. It might be a problem with your system or software settings. Have you checked for updates or performed a system reset?

Take a deep breath. Please reread this a few times. Your files aren’t saved to another HDD or another backup. I recommend a fresh installation. The Win10 preview isn’t available anymore, and it’s likely a bug that wasn’t included in the full release.
