Hello everyone,
I recently started experimenting with overclocking my system again. It’s not brand new, but I have a Windows 7 setup with an AMD FX 6300 Vishera CPU, an Asus M5A78L-M LE USB3 motherboard, an 8 GB Corsair DDR3 RAM (still not familiar with it because it’s quite old), a 1TB HDD, and a Strix GTX 970 GPU that’s already heavily overclocked. I’ve watched many YouTube tutorials and tried several adjustments, but I’m careful to monitor temperatures and plan to stop if things get too hot. I reached a maximum of 4.04 GHz and then dropped back to around 3.9 GHz because the temperatures were too high and the cores were reacting too aggressively from 4.04 GHz to 3.02 GHz. My HW settings are 2400 MHz and my CPU clock is set to 2000 MHz. I read a lot of guides and searched for tips, but nothing seems to help. I’ve installed Intel Stress Test, Core Temp, Prime95, Amd Overdrive, and the GPU-Z benchmark; if anyone can suggest improvements or let me know the limits, it would be really appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

Sure, just let me know what you think about what I can do with what I have right now... or if upgrading the motherboard would help.

You might consider browsing the used market for an Intel i7/xeon e3 1230, preferably from the second to fourth generation. This would enable you to repurpose your existing RAM. If not, I suggest waiting until you can afford a more suitable upgrade, such as this one. Investing heavily in an outdated system isn't practical.

I didn't recommend a new board since it's unnecessary. The whole system should be updated. Spending around $80 on a new board for that 6300 isn't worth it when you can get a faster CPU for the same price. I wouldn't invest in any board, CPU, or RAM at all. It's overdue and has been replaced by both sides. Trying to squeeze more value out is pointless. Sorry.
