What type of motherboard do you have, and what are your plans for using the computer? What is the amount of your upgrade budget?

CPU choice for an i7 would be the i7 2600, a solid option for someone with experience. For power needs, a Corsair or Seasonic unit rated gold would work well.

Identifying the problem: unclear help requests flooding the forum
Assessing compatibility: i7-2600 likely fits older motherboards, but value is doubtful
Upgrade considerations: 500W PSU recommendation, not a common upgrade decision
Request clarity: origin of the 500W PSU suggestion and intended PC improvements

Motherboard. You didn’t ask about the purpose of this upgrade. What’s the aim behind it? Whether it matters financially depends on what you need from the system.

Avoid purchasing items solely because of efficiency scores or past brand trustworthiness. This approach is most relevant in sectors where long-term performance and reliability matter more than short-term metrics.

Many well-known PSU brands don’t actually make the products they market. They usually partner with an OEM to create a design or purchase pre-made units and simply rebrand them. This leads to huge variations in quality between models. The idea of “historical brand reliability” doesn’t really apply. You’ll likely encounter people who love every major brand and others who have a strong negative experience with each one. Efficiency ratings simply indicate how well a unit performs under standard conditions. For most users, the difference between an 80+ Gold and 80+ Bronze PSU won’t affect their monthly electricity costs. It doesn’t reveal anything about the unit’s design, component quality, or long-term durability—just how much power is wasted from the wall.
