You’re switching your PC to a new operating system. First, back up any important data. Then, download the official Windows 10 installation media from Microsoft. Follow the on-screen instructions to install it, replacing your current OS. Make sure to enable the necessary drivers and settings during setup.

Visit the Microsoft website and purchase a Windows 10 license. Alternatively, consider buying it from kinguin to reduce costs. Additionally, ensure you install the most recent drivers compatible with your hardware.

You can simply install the new operating system without needing to remove anything from your current setup. Just follow the usual download and installation steps as you did before. Your games should still be available once the installation completes.

Begin by selecting a custom installation option during setup. Adjust the formatting for your HDD or SSD based on your needs, and then proceed to install Windows onto that storage device.

This won't affect any of your existing files such as games. I only have one HDD.

It will erase everything. Your Steam games won’t function on a different system unless you’ve moved them correctly. Formatting will delete all your files and programs, so always back up your data. Some applications will need to be reinstalled.

I think the upgrade is complimentary for Windows 8.1. I'm not certain if they made any changes, but you can visit their site and install the media creation tool to have it upgraded automatically.

The problem is attempting an upgrade. If the 8.1 key is a retail version instead of an OEM one, he won't be able to use the same key to install Windows on his new device.
