Change the approach. When removing the cooler, twist it to keep the CPU on the motherboard.

Disassemble carefully, applying some pressure since thermal compound offers limited resistance to shearing. Avoid bending the pins. Gently move the CPU cooler while lifting it out. After separation, wipe with paper towels and alcohol—adjust the method based on drying level. You can also use a dry paper towel over a trash can or scrape with a plastic tool like an old gift card if needed. The CPU remains intact; just ensure the locking arm is raised before reinsertion.

For your CPU stuck on the cooler, use a heat gun at low setting and gently twist it while holding the diagonal ends. The warmth will help loosen the paste. **WARNING** Avoid heating the CPU directly; focus on the cooler's copper lines instead.

Usually you simply pull straight up on the cooler, letting the CPU follow naturally, but some people suggest a slight twist if possible while pulling. This tends to fix the problem and keep the CPU stable. The best approach is to avoid bending pins altogether—be mindful of how much you twist and pull at once!

Occasionally it's better not to separate everything at once—just remove it all at once. The older Opteron coolers with flat surfaces rather than pipe contact with the CPU are the worst. Pipes often create a crease for air, reducing vacuum efficiency, though thicker TIMs can still cause issues. Any movement usually doesn't help since the TIM moves with the motion, preventing proper airflow. If the TIM is old, it tends to harden and won't flow like fresh TIM, sticking instead of spreading. This makes removal much easier, but some older TIMs can be stubborn, almost like glue or concrete. If that happens, the only solution is to fully remove the cooler.

Eventually, I placed the radiator with the CPU in the oven at 200°C for 10 minutes. After applying slight pressure on the CPU PCB, it detached. The CPU booted normally and ran idle at 35°C. I stopped testing immediately as I sold it. Proceed at your own risk.
