Check for lightweight Linux distributions. Look into options like LiteLinux, Tiny Linux, or minimal versions of Ubuntu that fit smaller storage.

Who shared this information? What kind of laptop is it? You might want to check out Debian at https://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst.

The issue is that most distributions have moved past CD sizes (~700MB) a long time ago. Who still uses CDR(W)? You'll likely need a DVD(+-R(W)) and a compatible writer to work with optical media if you really want to try. Starting a Linux distro from USB should be easy. About 10 years ago, some laptops were unreliable and hard-wired to rescue media, making USB booting nearly impossible. Even then, workarounds existed. Plus, those machines sometimes struggled even more with optical drives... (though some Windows laptops can't boot Windows from a USB stick at all). In my opinion, optical media should be avoided for this purpose whenever possible.
