I own a FTTH connection with 1 Gig down/up speed. I'm using an Asus AC88u router and have multiple devices connected for a slower VPN through it. I'm seeking suggestions to boost Wireguard or OpenVPN performance, aiming for speeds near 1Gbps. I need reliable connections with some ad-blocking capabilities. As a beginner, I'm open to experimenting and adding features as I become more familiar with Pfsense. I've considered used Dell OptiPlex, HP ProDesk G4 400, and Qotom boxes, but feel a bit confused about the choices. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Which size do you prefer? I’m leaning toward the used desktop/server option, though I’m okay with the space they occupy.

Odroid H2+ offers two 2.5GbE connectors, making it a solid future-ready option. PFsense 2.4.x lacks support for Ethernet hardware, but 2.5 does, so you can either wait for the update or try the beta version, which appears quite reliable. OPNsense works similarly to PFsense yet with a different development approach. UP Squared is another viable choice, featuring 1GbE connectors. I own both and tend to favor the Odroid, though the final decision depends on your needs.

It doesn't need to be very compact if the price is high; a desktop or smaller would work just fine.
