I enjoy Bodhi Linux on budget systems. Give it a shot. You receive a contemporary full-featured desktop (Moksha) without any trade-offs. Being Ubuntu-based also means you'll have many extra packages at your disposal if needed. I'm generally satisfied with it right away.
