Navigating the complex world of motherboards can be challenging.
I think my computer isn’t working properly and I need to upgrade it. I’m thinking about getting an AMD R5 7600X but finding it hard to choose a good motherboard in the wide market. What reliable brands are available now? Should I pick the B650 or B850 chipset? Do I need an m-ATX or m-ITX board, and should it include two full M.2 slots?
Almost every B850 offers solid performance without cutting corners, though all manufacturers share similar features. For the premium segment, ASUS stands out, while MATX tends to be more affordable and MITX commands a higher price.
Welcome to the discussion boards! You might think so, but fixing it could be more affordable. Are you curious about this option? If yes, share the details and the issue, or we can help you create something new or adapt parts from an existing build—just let us know specs like model, make, and power rating, plus what failed. Otherwise, most B850 mATX boards should work just fine. Here’s a filtered list of suitable mobos from PC Part Picker, including the asrock model with Wi-Fi support.
Oh wow, thanks for all response guys! Well the system I have is been upgraded over the years but here's a summary; CPU: AMD R5(?) 2400G MB: Asus ROG strix B450-I Ram: G.skill ripjaws 3200mhz Psu: Corsair tx650m GPU: Asus GeForce 3060 CPU, MB and ram is coming up to 6 years now, the rest a little newer. It's been running at a 11% overclock smoothly for almost a year until yesterday. All the sudden picture froze while just watching a show and no reaction to any input. Tried hard reset a few times and froze while loading windows or at login. Then tried again today, with only mouse/keyboard connected. And I logged in! Wow, ran a userbenchmark, no problems. Then I left it alone for a few minutes... And it had frozen again by the time I got back. Kinda weirded out by that I'm not getting a blue-screen. Got it running again but froze right after opening the browser.. Think I'll try to reset CMOS, unplugging extra hard drives, perhaps make a usb-botdrive(?) tomorrow to see if that will work.. I actually kinda got sick of looking at it so ordered new parts, ended up with a Gigabyte b850m ds3h, and the R5 9600x. And just some Crucial PRO DDR5-6400 that was on a discount over here. Also, been thinking of upgrading for a year, and with all the tariffs flying around I didn't dear to wait when it first broke down. Hope I can get the pars working and try to sell them, if not build a server with them later on.
The most recent freeze occurred when the browser (Chrome) was reopened after closing all tabs and launching a YouTube video. This morning I successfully logged back in, opened the browser, and within 1-2 seconds of starting the video it froze again. No specific details were found in the "event-viewer" section.
Attempted to start using a USB drive, but the system froze when loading. Tested with and without a GPU, and with or without the M.2 installation, no improvement was seen.
It might be a failing RAM module or a malfunctioning motherboard. I’d understand that, especially with these issues and the current setup. I’d consider swapping everything out and addressing the problem gradually, keeping an eye on finding a better server or selling it privately in the future.
Okay, so a little update for the 'old-PC'. I picked up a cheap m-ITX case and a pico-psu, connected everything up, froze, did some changes in bios (5 times or more), up and running, ran a few benchmarks, no problem, my buddy and I were just left dumbfounded, could not figure out what we did right or wrong. Took it with me back home, ran for 5 min, crashed. Swapped the CPU with a 'new' used 2400g pro, and it's been working like a dream for a month now, using it as my main computer for my studies. IDK if any of you will see this, but now I'm actually looking to perhaps upgrade the CPU because I find it to be a bit slow with multiple tabs, browsers, Zoom and etc. up. I'm thinking of the 5600G, which can be purchased for approximately $80-90 used over here, or $140 for a new one. And perhaps also get 32GB of RAM since I'm using up +90% as is. Or hold out for another year and hope the prices continue to drop more on the AM5 platform and get something like the 8600G.
