You’re considering a NAS setup with up to eight drive bays using Jonsbo N4 microATX boards. You’re weighing the pros and cons of having all eight headers versus using four and adding expansion cards for the rest. Your main concern is whether opting for four headers and an expansion card introduces any hidden issues or limitations you haven’t considered.

You're perfect without any issues. Just ensure you have an iGPU and consider adding an extension card for better performance. Some PCIe cards support multiple SATA ports, which is great.

I suggest using a HBA card. You usually discover budget-friendly options on eBay that include breakout cables. Many of these support at least eight drives and tend to be more user-friendly compared to PCIe SATA cards.
