I'm evaluating NRPE for remote monitoring with Nagios. It's still a viable option, though alternatives may exist depending on your needs.

For Linux systems, my preferred Nagios method is check_by_ssh. It's straightforward and secure. NRPE remains common, though it's now considered deprecated and should be updated. I believe NCPA serves as the modern replacement for NRPE. Previously, when monitoring Windows environments, NSClient++ or WMI were the standard approaches.
