When pairing an i5-6600k with a Z270 motherboard, you don't have to perform a BIOS update. However, if you switch to a new Kaby Lake CPU with an older Skylake board, a BIOS update will be necessary. The i5-7600k with a Z170 motherboard requires a BIOS update as well. i5-6600k remains a more cost-effective option. If you decide to update, should you also download the latest driver version?

The newest BIOS version is available on the manufacturer's motherboard product page.
OK I'm still confused (sorry, I'm new to PCs). OK I checked the motherboard details on the MSI support site and it mentions support for 6th generation core processors.
http://
, so I then looked at 6th generation processors and found the i5 6600k on the official Intel website.

On the MSI Z170A GAMING M5 product page, under the 'Service' section, you'll find a 'Compability' area where compatible CPUs are listed. Look for 'i5-7600k' in that list and the BIOS file will be available at the end under 'result'.

You will find all compatible CPUs listed here.
Next, look for 'i5-7600k' in the compatibility section and under 'result' you'll see the required BIOS file.
Thank you.

But the board won't work with a 7600k unless you upgrade the BIOS, which creates a catch-22 situation. You'll remain stuck with a board that doesn't support the 7600k until you install the BIOS update, and that update requires a compatible Skylake chip already in place.

Can you make a USB stick using the BIOS file on another system, adjust boot priority, and install it that way?

No not with that board. Some boards have CPU free methods to update BIOS, usually by pressing a button on the board and connecting a USB drive, but you need M-Flash to load to update (the BIOS update utility for MSI) and to do that you need to first access BIOS.
Without a CPU providing a display there'll be no way to reboot in M-Flash mode.

Multipack :
Not with that board. Certain boards offer CPU-free ways to update the BIOS, typically by pressing a button and connecting a USB drive, but you require M-Flash to load the updates (the BIOS update tool for MSI) and first access BIOS to do so. Without a CPU showing a display, rebooting in M-Flash mode isn't possible.

It indicates that accessing the BIOS requires an update to properly recognize the i5-7400k processor. You won't be able to reach the BIOS unless a compatible CPU is installed. It looks like purchasing a Z270 motherboard would be a better option to prevent compatibility problems.
