I bought the Ryzen 1600 (should have gotten the 1700) and set up a new.system with it and the Asus X370 Prime Pro Mobo. After updating the BIOS, everything was straightforward. I watched some overclocking videos and figured out what to do. When I set my CPU to 4.0ghz at 1.35 volts, it ran slow and seemed too easy for a solid overclock. Checking Ryzen Master showed it was running at 1.55ghz, but the BIOS reported 3.99ghz. I tried again with 4.0ghz at 1.4 volts, loading to Windows and Cinebench but crashing during tests. I lowered the voltage to 3.9 at 1.4 and 3.8 at 1.4, which loaded to AIDA but crashed in stress tests. I went back to 3.7 at 1.35 with a 2933 MHz RAM clock. The RAM speed was 3200, but the CPU would crash without going past 2933. I reverted to the old BIOS because it seemed like something was wrong. I really wanted to reach 3.9 stable. It looks like I might need to try again later with a better cooler. What are the chances I can get higher clocks with a new one?

This was why I chose 1600X—it doesn’t even struggle at 3.7 with the same MB, and it’s well under what a cooler from FX can handle. I also tried OCing to 3.9, but it’s too demanding for that cooler, making it impossible to run continuously. Once I get the mounting kit for my CM Nepton 140 XL cooler, it should work fine.
