My PC frequently freezes and needs a reboot during gameplay.
I’m reaching out for assistance because I’ve exhausted all my troubleshooting options. Recently, while playing games such as Mortal Kombat 11 and Hunt Showdown, my computer has begun experiencing sudden, forceful shutdowns – akin to physically pressing the power button. These crashes are more frequent with Hunt Showdown, but significantly more common during Mortal Kombat, particularly during character introductions or intense combat maneuvers when a character’s health is low.
Here are my system details:
CPU: i7-6700 3.40GHz base
OS: Windows 10 Professional
GPU: Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled
PSU: Corsair RMi1000 (1000W)
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (Corsair branded)
I’ve attempted the following steps to resolve this issue:
* Replaced my CPU cooler with a Coolmaster Hyper 212, ensuring the CPU temperature remains consistently low under stress tests (around 42 degrees Celsius).
* Increased my RAM capacity from 8GB to 16GB.
* Moved Mortal Kombat 11 (used for testing) to a separate hard drive.
* Disabled non-essential audio drivers, leaving only my Razer Kraken headset active.
* Reinstalled Windows entirely.
* Performed a stress test using AIDA64 on my entire system, including the GPU – the computer did not crash even when exceeding the power draw of the triggering games. This test ran for approximately 20 minutes.
* Executed “sfc /scannow” in Command Prompt, which reported no errors.
* Updated both Windows and GPU drivers.
* Checked the Windows Reliability Monitor, which only provided a general error indicating Windows didn’t shut down properly.
I am at a loss for what to do next, and I would appreciate any potential advice. I initially suspected the games themselves were the culprit, but the problem occurs with two distinct titles now, suggesting a wider issue.
Regarding your RAM upgrade, did you replace it entirely or add to your existing setup? If the original memory module remains, I’d recommend performing a memory diagnostic or testing with only the new component. Errors in data transfer can lead to unpredictable and unusual issues.
Your processor's temperature rarely exceeds 42 degrees? The i7-6700 is not typically known for its low operating temperature, so this seems surprising.
Are you utilizing Hwmonitor and/or Hwinfo64? Could you please share your graphics card temperature readings?
Upon acquiring the memory, I received entirely fresh modules – two 8GB sticks resulting in a combined capacity of 16GB. The previously installed RAM is presently inactive. I have been utilizing Corsair Link to observe temperature readings and conduct performance tests, revealing that the graphics card rarely exceeds 70 degrees Celsius, typically maintaining a temperature of approximately 50 degrees Celsius during gameplay.
Problems arose both prior to and following the installation of fresh memory, however, I intend to proceed with this test regardless. It appears improbable that the RAM is responsible for these difficulties, though. Could you offer any alternative recommendations at this time?
Simply put, Memtest doesn't necessitate swapping out any hardware components to run its diagnostic. It’s not beneficial to execute it in reverse order.
I conducted the examination for approximately one hour and thirty minutes (I haven't yet had an opportunity to perform it throughout the night, please forgive me). One successful outcome, with zero issues reported.
I wanted to inform you of an issue I’ve been experiencing, which appears to occur when my graphics card is heavily utilized. While it doesn't typically overheat significantly, I’ve found that Hunt Showdown frequently prevents my computer from running without crashing—specifically, character interaction sequences in Mortal Kombat caused crashes almost every time. However, after increasing the “Render Resolution Scale” within Hunt Showdown, I began encountering crashes consistently upon loading into the game. I’ve already attempted troubleshooting by re-seating my graphics card and thoroughly cleaning the connections, but the problem persists. It’s puzzling, as my card isn't particularly outdated.
