Guys, suddenly my laptop screen just went totally black. But when I shine a phone light on it and look closely, something is still there. It looks like the brightness was set really low (I tried turning it down more but nothing changed). I've been looking into this and think it might be a backlight issue, which would mean the screen needs replacing. I already got a new screen for my notebook, but the same problem keeps happening; I can only see an image when I shine that phone light on it. If I plug in an external monitor via HDMI, everything works fine. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

It sounds like the light back power supply broke.

The inverter circuit sits on the motherboard instead of being built inside the LCD screen.
