My laptop acting bad when I close the lid while it's on.
I am using a laptop called MSI Katana GF66 with an NVIDIA RTX 3050. I have been trying to fix some problems for a while now because sometimes my PC acts weirdly or has issues when I turn it on. At first, I thought the computer was too hot and would slow down games, but after turning up the cooler settings in the MSI Center app, nothing helped. Now, even though some games give me super fast scores like 100fps on Forza Horizon 5, most of the time my FPS stays between 50 and 60. I don't know why this happens anymore. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for me? Here are a few more details: My CPU is an Intel Core i7-11800H running at about 2.3 GHz with 16 GB of RAM (though only 15.7 GB actually works). I am using Windows 11 Home on the x64 version, which came with a 1000 build number and was installed on June 25th, 2023. Thanks for reading!
Hey there, well it is very possible that your CPU is getting hot and slowing down. You can check this by running a Cinebench R23 test while watching HWInfo show what speed the CPU is hitting. Your CPU should be at 4.2GHz for all cores during the test. If it stays at 4.2, then everything is cooling fine. But if the clocks drop because the cooling isn't good enough, that could affect your games too. Is every system driver updated? Is the BIOS also current? Check MSI's website to see if you can get newer versions of those things.
Hey @Roland Of Gilead and thanks for replying with a heart emoji! I followed your advice and I'm worried that it could be the issue. I ran Cinebench R23 alongside HWInfo, both at the same time while keeping fan speed in MSI Center set to cooler boost. Here are the results: From the moment I clicked start on the bench, my clock speeds dropped from about 4.4 GHz down to somewhere between 3.5 and 3.6 GHz. I haven't done this before, so I might not be right here, but what do you think?
Hey No worries glad to help Okay it seems like your CPU is getting too hot and slowing down. Now we need to find out why. Please install Throttlestop software to let us run a built-in test that will show what's wrong. When you start the test, make sure to open up the "limit reasons" tab. During the test, you might see little lights flash around the border of the screen. If they are red or yellow, those ones need your attention. The specific codes are usually PL1, PL2, EDP, and so on. Let me know if that works for you. Have you recently cleaned up your laptop really well, or since you bought it?
Hey @Roland Of Gilead Sorry it took me a while but these days I tried some of the things you suggested me to do it and I finally found the real problem! The problem was an old BIOS update that I forgot to do (and I don't know how lol), the update "E1582IMS.314", released on date 2023/3/31. It fixed a bug that lead to low performance when powering on the system with closing lid (which I did every day, since I have a dual monitor setup). It seems that the occasions where I had "extreme performance" were just the normality, when I forgot the lid open during the boot. Now all of the problems above mentioned are solved and my pc is absolutely better than ever! I really don't know how I forgot something as important as updating my BIOS and I really don't know how to thank you for your help and kindness. Hope you the best.
Wow, great. So glad things are fixed! Everyone does that sometimes. I usually forget a little bit about myself, which breaks the game. I often wake up at 3 am knowing what to do. 😂 Have a good time and good luck with your fun stuff.
