What’s your lowest average ping in milliseconds? Don’t just rely on sites like Google or Twitter; investigate local resources – such as the public library and major retailers based in your area. Local news websites often exhibit high latency, so continue searching for optimal connections. Ideally, you’ll find a route with minimal turns, perhaps one or two unless you experience unusual instability.

This helps determine if the issue lies within your ISP's network infrastructure. In severe cases, individuals have consistently faced 80ms or higher pings, particularly on game servers, and resolving this by switching ISPs resulted in significantly lower latency – often around 10ms or less. However, this isn’t assured; it’s simply a hopeful outcome.

It's important to note that neither ISP can nor will attempt to reduce your ping. You are constrained by their system’s limitations. I previously experienced years with DSL, mistakenly believing it offered superior performance compared to cable. Historically, cable utilized shared bandwidth with fluctuating download speeds during peak hours. Currently, cable often achieves 100-105% of its advertised download speed (105-106% for me), while DSL providers typically only guarantee 80%, rarely exceeding 90%. My upload speed, however, consistently reaches 120% of the advertised rate.

My own ping has decreased from an average of 40ms to a consistent 10ms. Furthermore, I receive significantly greater value for my money at approximately $40 per month for 100MB download speeds, compared to only 15MB. Nevertheless, there are no guarantees.

Considering this, is your ISP truly superior to mine? I pay a reasonable fee for download speeds exceeding my needs, and my ping remains consistently low at 10ms. My download speed routinely tests at 106MB despite being contracted for 100MB, even when utilizing a VPN, it maintains a minimum of 99MB. The only minor inconvenience is the limited upload speed (5 MB), which slightly impacts uploads to YouTube, although my average upload rate is approximately 6MB and I typically upload videos no longer than 15 minutes.
