Hey there, I've got a similar situation with my grandpa's emails too. He has them all saved in Apple Mail, but the usual methods didn't work. After some research, I realized the archive is a large V4 folder, around 85GB. I tried moving it to Google Drive and setting up Thunderbird, but there were no mbox files inside. The folders are named with .mbox extensions, which made things tricky. I'm hoping someone can help me transfer everything to Gmail while preserving the original structure.

iCloud functions as a standard IMAP email backend. Using a mail client such as Thunderbird should allow you to log in to iCloud Mail, switch services, and transfer messages between them. Since this didn’t work for you, let’s know which email client you were using during your first attempt.
