My frame rates are significantly decreasing in every game I play.
Hello everyone,
About a week ago, I was playing Fortnite and experienced a sudden drop in my frame rate – it plummeted from 200 fps to just 70 instantly. I noticed my PC was running very hot that day, so I checked the temperatures and found my Ryzen 5 2600 was reaching between 85-90°C with the stock AMD cooler, and my GTX 1660 was at around 75°C.
After a week, I suspected the high temperatures were causing the issue and installed a fan in front of my PC. Immediately, I saw a 20°C drop in temperatures – it wasn’t ideal as a fix, but it did seem to help. Even with the cooler temperatures, I was still getting occasional frame drops when playing Fortnite, leading me to believe it might be related to a recent update from the game developers.
Today I tried GTA V, and it ran smoothly at around 80-100 fps. However, the frame rate quickly dropped to a consistent 30-35 fps – and it hasn't improved since I restarted my computer. Do you have any ideas about what might be causing this?
Could you provide me with your full system specifications, including the make and model of your power supply unit? Also, could you share details about your CPU and GPU temperatures as well as their usage while playing games?
My system specs are: a Ryzen 5 2600 with its standard cooler, no overclocking; an MSI Gaming X 1660 graphics card; an MSI Tomahawk Max motherboard; 16GB of G.Skill Trident Z memory at 3000MHz speed, and a Seasonic Focus Gold power supply – 650W. I’m going to monitor the GPU and CPU usage now.
Here’s a breakdown of my gaming temperatures and resource usage while playing Fortnite and GTA. I've included screenshots showing the data from my sessions with both games, so you can see how performance and heat levels behaved during gameplay.
