My computer seems to be acting strange.
It occurred unexpectedly. A splash of beer landed on the top of my PC, passing through two fans and part of the GPU. The machine shut down almost instantly—probably within 2 to 3 seconds after contact. I unplugged everything right away and removed all components. Using a strong isopropyl solution and a Q-tip, I cleaned any affected areas. I recommend letting it air dry for at least two days.
I’m curious why the CPU reacted this way—did it protect against a short or was there a guaranteed fault? I’m prepared to test parts one by one until I find the issue, but mainly wanted to know if the shutdown was a self-protective measure rather than a sign of imminent failure. This machine was built with a new 3080 graphics card about two months ago, so I’m feeling a bit insecure. The beer was likely half full before, and only a quarter when I picked it up—about 4 ounces spilled. The mesh shield on the Corsair 4000D case probably stopped some of it, but the fans spun and dispersed small amounts inside. I’ve talked to several people about keeping drinks away from PCs, and now I’m realizing I was just an idiot.
I've experienced the same situation when I was younger. I accidentally poured Mountain Dew through the vent into my case. Luckily, the liquid only touched the backplate of my GPU and the bottom of the case. But my machine didn't shut down. Your setup is more concerning. You'll need to dry out any parts that got wet. After drying, give a prayer for good luck and test the system's power. If any parts were affected by the spill, protection circuits will stop it from turning on. If the spill reached your GPU, it might start up but you won't see any video output—expect a POST code (a number on the motherboard or a series of beeps). If it doesn’t power on at all, you’ll have to check each component one by one. If you have another computer, try swapping in other parts like extra PCIe cards or storage drives to see if they work. I’m hoping for minimal damage, okay?
Beer conducts electricity well, so I’d take it apart, clean it, and check for any faults like shorts. It seems the GPU might be affected, possibly due to a motherboard issue.
There are multiple ways this situation could unfold. The best scenario is a brief issue close to the power connectors, causing a short to ground and activating PSU safeguards. In the worst case, the PCIe power supply gets damaged somewhere else on the GPU that shouldn't draw more than 150W or lose its PCIe lanes entirely. The exact location might be in between these possibilities.
Thank you for your update. I was wondering if a safety measure existed to stop short circuits, but it seems it happened anyway. I’ve tried using isopropyl repeatedly and no traces remain on the motherboard or GPU. Only the GPU backplate was removed, without opening it fully, so the paste/pad stayed in place. It didn’t absorb much of the liquid. I’m holding out now. Tomorrow night I’ll test with just the PSU, MOBO, CPU with integrated graphics and one RAM stick. If that fails, I’ll proceed from there.
For those keeping up: It works surprisingly well! I verified each component individually until I stabilized the system and the GPU held up. Currently, everything is powered on except the two highest fans. I’m hesitant about reinserting them but plan to get fresh ones this weekend. I’m still wondering if additional testing or stressing the GPU/cPU might uncover something, but they’re running at normal temps. No unusual odors or noises. Thanks for your feedback. I’ll update once the wiring is secured and replacement fans are in place. Hallelujah!
I swapped out the fans and everything seems to be working, though there are some changes: 1) The PC opens programs more slowly—Steam especially lags behind. 2) Benchmarks with Heaven showed solid frame rates even at 70°C on 2560x1440 ultra settings, but my score dropped compared to before. 3) The OSD for Precision X1 used to show both frame rate and GPU temperature; now it only displays the frame rate. I’ve checked all settings, but I’m not sure why the temp info is missing. It might just be a perception issue, though it feels off. If it doesn’t work anymore, I’ll have to wait and see. At least it’s still running.
